Displaying fresh power and vigor, the University baseball team, hammering the offerings of three opposing pitchers, overwhelmed the William and Mary nine yesterday on Soldiers Field in a 13 to 2 victory. It was the first win over a college aggregation since the Brown game on May 30.
Captain H. W. Burns '28, G. E. Donaghy '29, and John Prior '29 led the attack for the Crimson team, while J. N. Barbee '28 held the visitors in check, allowing only five scattered hits and but one base on balls. The fielding gem of the day came in the eighth inning when W. B. Jones '28, in right field, made a diving catch which robbed Scammon, the visiting third baseman, of a two-bagger.
Crimson Gets Early Start
After scoring one in the second, the Crimson offensive started the fireworks in the third inning. Five hits in succession, including triples by Donaghy and P. B. Cutts '28, added to a base on balls, gave the University players a six run margin. In the fifth, Burns singled, stole second, and then crossed the plate on a safety by J. P. Chase '28. Harvard's total was brought up to eight in the next frame, when Prior tripled, tallying on a passed ball.
Burns opened the University's half of the seventh with a smashing circuit drive. Chase then walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. W. W. Lord '28 sent him home with a long sacrifice fly.
Total Brought To 13
In its last turn at bat, the Crimson nine brought its run total to thirteen, scoring three times on a walk, a sacrifice, and three timely singles.
Barbee, luminary of this spring's nine until a rheumatic back put him on the shelf almost a month ago, hurled his first full game yesterday afternoon since the Dartmouth encounter on May 12. In six of the innings of yesterday's clash, no Indian succeeded in reaching the initial sack. A brace of hits in both the fourth and eighth frames accounted for the two William and Mary run.
