EARTHQUAKE DETECTED BY UNIVERSITY SEISMOGRAPH

An earthquake of moderate intensity was recorded yesterday by the University seismograph in the basement of the Peabody Museum located on Oxford Street.

The shocks were the first ones of distinct strength recorded in the seismograph in recent weeks. The needle began to record its jagged lines about 12.30 o'clock, and for two hours its agitation continued. Three main wave trains shook the shaft that penetrates the earth many feet below the recording instruments. The first one was written-out a few minutes after 1 o'clock, and the others followed during the next ten minutes. At a late hour yesterday afternoon the disturbances had not been definitely placed.

The University seismograph is one of the first to be established in the country.
