One of the strongest departments of the 1928 football squad is that of tackle. Fortified with two veterans of last year's team and several other men whose record or promise so far have made them strong contenders for first team honors. Coach Horween and his line coach, R. J. Dunne, should not find undue worry in the tackle situation.
Chief among the candidates for a first team position is J. E. Barrett '30, whose experience and strength are such as to make it seem quite certain that, barring injuries, he will be in the starting line up for all this fall's games. Barrett was a star both at Worcester Academy and on his Freshman eleven, and played consistently last fall though handicapped by an illness from which he was recovering: This fall Barrett should realize his true possibilities as a tackle.
Teamed with Barrett on the first eleven at present is F. A. Clark '29, another veteran. If Clark can succeed in putting his 200 pounds or so to their full advantage, he will develop into a really first-rate tackle. His chief trouble in the past has not been lack of ruggedness or his aggressiveness, but in a certain awkwardness which has prevented him from utilizing his full powers.
Pressing close on the heels of these two are the remaining members of the tackle squad, F. S. Davis '30, H. L. Morris Jr. '30, T. H. Alcock '29, K. D. Robinson '29, and W. T. Storey '30. They have all had some experience either in University or in Freshman competition, but their true worth under high pressure is an unknown quality and the team may suffer materially if either Clark or Rarrett should fall victim to the injury jink which has been an constantly dogging the trial of the Crimson.
