The Division of Biology made public yesterday that it has adopted the Tutorial System, leaving only two major fields Chemistry and Physics, in which the system is not used.
Most of the tutors have been appointed and a meeting is scheduled for May 1 to discuss the plans for the change. The actual system will not be put in force, however, until fall.
The decision of the Division of Biology to come into the ranks of other divisions now operating under the tutorial system was made several months ago, though the public announcements of the change was withheld until yesterday. Chemistry and Physics, the only two remaining divisions not using the tutorial method, are expected to adopt the English system in the near future.
The committee directing the transition from the lecture system to the tutorial in the Biology department consists of Oakes Ames 98, W. H. Rand '98, and W. J. Crozier '18. This committee had announced that members of the Class of 1927 may choose this spring between the usual final examinations in courses within the field of concentration or a general examination on the subject matter in the field of concentration.
The choice will be allowed only this spring, however, because the students have not had the benefit of tutorial supervision. In the future, a general examination will be required.
The general examinations, in contrast to the ordinary final examinations, will be oral and will cover a wider field in a more general way than is the case in the final examinations.
This spring, it is hoped that men concentrating in Biology will afford themselves of the opportunity they have to take the general examinations, thus making the step from the one form of instruction to the other less abrupt Students who wish to take these examinations, which will be held between May 15 and June 1, are urged to arrange dates with the Committee as soon as possible.
