The University polo team will begin its spring outdoor season in the first part of May it was announced yesterday by E. W. Mudge '27, manager of the team. The practice is starting late because the Polo Intercollegiates, which will be the high mark of the season's work, do not begin this year until June 16. They will last for a week, finishing before the crew race at New London.
Practice for the University squad, which will be made up of approximately nine riders, will be held at the Dedham Country and Polo Club. The nine army horses used by the team and the private mounts belonging to the players will all be stabled at the Country Club. Practice will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and Majors J. B. Wogan and William Spence will coach the University four. The coaches as well as players from the college will play against the first team regularly in order to give it enough practice before it competes in the Intercollegiates.
Other polo enthusiasts will have an opportunity to test their skill at Mr. Robert Shaw's estate at Newton Centre, which he has kindly allowed the University to use for this purpose. For the horses used there Mr. Ayer's stable will be used. These practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Beginning June 1, or approximately that date, the team will play a number of games at the Myopia Club preparing for its final meets.
Due to the fact that there are no Freshman teams entered in the intercollegiates there will be no team formed from members of the class of 1930 this spring, but first year men, if they are sufficiently skilled, may practice with the University.
In past years the team has always done very well, winning the intercollegiates in 1924; it went down to defeat at the hands of Yale in the finals last year. Although two members of last year's team are gone it is hoped that new players will fill their places to ride with Captain R. A. Pinkerton '27, and W. H. White '28.
