At 2.30 o'clock today the funeral of Professor Charles Sprague Sargent '62. Arnold Professor of Arboriculture and Director of the Arnold Arooretum, will be held in St. Paul's Episcopal Chapel in Brookline.
Professor Sargent, who was born in Boston in 1841, died Tuesday at his home in Brookline following an illness of two weeks. He was in charge of the Arnold Arboretum since its creation and perhaps the most prominent American in the field of Arboriculture and Forestry.
He fought in the Civil War, retiring as a Major. Professor Sargent received numerous awards for his work and was the author of many books on the study of botanical subjects, on which he was considered the leading authority.
He planned the Jesap Collection of North American Woods for the American Museum of Natural History in New York and was a member for many years of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
