First place in the annual competition for the Topiarian Club trophy, open to students in the School of Landscape Architecture, was awarded last night to H. B. Campbell 3S.L.A. of Columbus, Ohio.
Two second prizes take the place of the customary second and third prize awards this year. These are two books on landscape architecture which will go to F. J. Cormier 1S.L.A. of Newton, and M. J. Williams 2S.L.A. of Toronto, Canada.
Honorable mention was given to C. M. Herrick 3S.L.A. of Columbus, Ohio, and M. S. Sayer 2S.L.A. of Tiffin, Ohio.
31 Drawings Judged
The 31 drawings submitted were judged yesterday afternoon by Hale J. Walker, M.L.A. '20, of Carthage, Illinois, Associate partner of the firm of John Nolen, landscape architects, a past winner of the contest, and Gordon Culham, M.L.A., in City Planning. '25, of the Olmsted office in Brookline, who served with Professor J. L. Pray '95, chairman of the School of Landscape Architecture; Professor H. V. Hubbard '97, of the firm of Olmsted Brothers; and Professor B. W. Pond, M.L.A. '11, President of the Boston Society of Landscape Architects.
The competition was a problem in landscape design. The competitors were furnished with a topographic map representing an amusement park on a waterfront, and were asked to design all the features, concessions, amusement devices, and other arrangements calculated for the pleasure and convenience of patrous.
Trophy Awarded for 13 Years
This is the thirteenth competition for the trophy, which was given to the Topiarian Club by an unknown donor and competed for annually. The winner has his name inscribed on the trophy.
The drawings which were entered in this competition will go on exhibition beginning tomorrow, and wll remain on exhibition until January 27, between the hours of 9 and 5 o'clock in the Hall of Casts on the first floor of Robinson Hall.
