Ed. note:--The CRIMSON publishes below a communication from a successful New York politician who is bitterly opposed to the abolition of compulsory military training in the colleges and universities of the United states.
To the Editor of the CRIMSON:
The four reasons for opposing Military training in the Colleges, presented by Fellx Cohen, on behalf of the intercollegiate Conference of the League for Industrial Democracy, and published on the 31st, ulto., to my mind is the Elysium of oddities, the limbo of absurdities and the imbroglio of indiorous anomalies.
The fourth reason given "That all preparedness and all drills are wrong" answers he other three first, "that it is peace-time conscription," second "the so-called optional drill is disguised compulsory drill and is really worse, because it is a subterfuge." Third "that it has the effect of a bureaucratic control in education." Now, no man who has the least knowledge of the real state of the world affairs today, can possibly be convinced, though he may perhaps be bewildered, by arguments like these, stated by Felix Cohen; because no man of common sense can live among his follow-creatures for a day without seeing innumerable facts which contradict it.
The after math of the World War has left the United States with certain people, whom consider courage now no longer necessary even to the military character, that timid disposition, and which are the natural defense of weakness should be the ruling power of government in the United States. They believe in sentimentality which is synonymous with idiocy; they are opposed to physical force for their own or others protection; they deny the reason for which governments exist. They believe pains from the moral source are the pains derived form the unfavorable sentiments of mankind. These pains are capable of rising to a height with which hardly any other pains incident to our own nature can be compared, and under which hardly any man, not below the standard of humanity, can endure to live. It will supersede the use of other means yes Military. They are afraid of Military action because the action of the Military shall be instantly and accurately component to the will of the Commander. Terror is the grand instrument. Terror can work only through assurance that evil will follow any failure of conformity between the will and action willed. Every failure must therefore be punished. Even the most minute must be visited with the heaviest in fiction, and as failure in extreme exactness must frequently happen, the occasion of cruelty must be incessant, therefore (Military) as a part of the necessity of government from the principal of human nature, every government, it may be said, will, if it can take the objects of its desire from every other, and the stronger will infallibaly take from the weaker till the weaker is altogether enslaved. So if the League for Industrial Democracy do not believe in Military training in Colleges, on the ground "that all drills are wrong" the sooner the Federal Government, comes to universal Military training of all male school children between 14 and 15 years of age then and not before then will we maintain this Country in the ranks of the leading first powers of all Governments in the World. LOUIS A CUVILLIER, Member New York Legislature, Committee on Military Affairs.
