UNIVERSITY POLO TEAM IS DEFENDING CHAMPION

Intercollegiate Championship Takes Place Week of June 19--Five Teams Are Entered

With the tournament for the Intercollegiate Championship in polo only two weeks off, five teams are putting the finishing touches on their campaigns for the intercollegiate title. Play will begin at the Westchester Biltmore Country Club in Rye on June 19, when the University meets Princeton. The final match will be played the following Saturday, June 26.

Of the five teams entered for the championship, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, West Point and Pennsylvania Military College, the University team is the defending champion. According to all expectations, the Crimson team will be in a position to repeat its stirring victory of last year, for the University horsemen are all veterans.

The entire team that won the championship last year will be riding for the Crimson. F. D. Stranahan Jr. '26 will play number 1. Alexander Shaw '28 number 2, W. H. White '28 number 3, and R. A. Pinkerton '27 at back. Of these the first three have been playing polo for four years. Pinkerton for three.

The Yale team which gave the University its closest battle last year, is quite new in composition, though three of its members have been playing polo for five years and more. C. R. Barrett will be seen at number 1. W. F. C. Guest at number 2. F. C. Baldwin number 3. and W. K. Muir, captain, at back. Guest is the only one of those who played last year and he is a veteran as young polo players go, being the son of Captain the Hon. F. E. Guest, the famous British internationalist. Baldwin is a brother of H. P. Baldwin, who starred for Yale in previous seasons.

The Princeton team, which was rather disappointing last year when it was defending a hard-won title, is again an unknown quantity, though one of its members is a star of some possibilities, I. H. Clothier, who will be seen at the important number 3 position. H. L. Crawford will play number 1. W. L. Colket number 2, and H. R. Erdman, back. These players are all new with the exception of Clothier.

The team from the Pennsylvania Military College will be unusually strong, if its early season showing, when it defeated Yale rather handily, is any indication. Three of the members are left from last year's team, and the combination seems to have both experience and power. Alvin M. Burt will play number 1. D. N. Jones number 2, J. Whitehurst number 3 and Elmer Putt back.

The West Point team which has never yet won an intercollegiate championship, though the West Pointers have always had an exceptional interest in riding and polo, will be stronger than usual and make a powerful bid for the championship. The team was badly upset by the death after an accident of one of its members. H. S. Hawkins, Jr., but it has played on courageously and should make a fine showing. Its lineup has not yet been definitely decided.

All in all, this year's tournament should be one of the closest in the history of the sport. It will bring forth keen competition, certainly, for the University, Yale,
