HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES TO GATHER HERE JUNE 5

Contenders Will Be Divided Into Two Classes, A and B--Bingham Is Slated to Head Officials

The sixth annual Massachusetts High School track and field meet will be held in the Stadium on June 5.

The meet is sponsored by the H. A. A. and is under the direction of B. W. Griscom '29, the 1929 track manager.

Invitations have been sent out to 75 high schools, and the complete list of entries will be announced late this week. The competing schools will be divided into two classes A and B according to the established custom of the meet, the first including the schools where track is a well developed sport and the second comprising those which have not yet built up the sport to any great extent.

Meet Has Nine Events

The meet consists of only nine events including a relay race, and no competitor, is allowed to enter more than two and the relay. The mile run, discus, javelin, and shot as well as the regular hurdle event are omitted from the program. A 120 yard low hurdle race has been substituted for the more severe collegiate events.

The purpose of the meet is to foster the development of track in Massachusetts high schools where the sport has not attained the important position it holds in the Middle Atlantic States. During the six years that the University has held these meets the progress of track among the schoolboys of greater Boston has been remarkable.

Last year Brockton won the meet with 37 points, Medford coming second with 21. The class B winner was Lawrence with Melrose as runner up. Many of the marks set in the class A competition give evidence of the quality of the athletes the meet attracts. The 220 was clocked in 23 seconds, and the broad and high jumps brought out 21 feet 1 1-2 inch and 5 feet 9 inch performers respectively.

W. J. Bingham '16, will head the list of officials as referee with R. C. Floyd filling the position of Clerk of Course. The committee of high school instructors which is in charge of the meet on the part of the schools is composed of the following: E. M. Roberts, Brockton, Chairman; A. W. Dickinson, Newton, R. K. Kenrall, Medford, and J. M. Gallagher, Boston Latin.
