A new evidence of the concentration of powers in the hands of the Director of Athletics is seen in the vote of the Athletic Committee made public last night providing that the nomination of members of the Graduate Advisory Committees should hereafter be made by the Athletic Director.
This means, it is understood, that nominations, hitherto in the hands of the captain or head coach, will be made by W. J. Bingham '16, the newly appointed Director of Athletics. It is assumed, though not specifically included in the vote, that the Athletic Director will confer with the Captain before making, his nominations.
A raise in the price of tickets to the Dartmouth football game next fall from $3 to $4 was authorized by the Athletic Committee at the same time. It is provided, however, that tickets for members of the Faculty and student body should be $2.
Athletic Budget Approved
The budget submitted to the Athletic Committee by the Graduate Treasurer was considered at the same meeting and was approved for submission to the Corporation at its first meeting in June.
An extension of the policy inaugurated last winter of swelling the funds for general athletics through increased proceeds from the big football games is seen in some quarters as evident in the present plan to increase the price of tickets for the Dartmouth games.
The initial step in this direction was taken during the first week of March, by the athletic committees of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton when it was agreed to raise the general price of tickets for "Big Three" football games to $5 for all except members of the universities concerned, for whom it was reduced to $2.
At that time the joint committees of the three universities specifically provided that the proposed increases in annual revenue should be applied solely to the maintenance and development of general athletic facilities and not to increasing the budgets of intercollegiate athletic teams. The statement further stipulated that the existing agreements limiting total budgets for coaching and individual salaries should be maintained.
