Bliss Perry Succeeds Murray as English A Changes Hands

Professor Murray Will Take Charge of Tutorial Work in Modern Languages Division

English A will come under the supervision of Professor Bliss Perry next year, while Professor J. Tucker Murray '99 will have charge of all tutorial work in the Division of Modern Languages, it was announced last night by Professor J. L. Lowes '05, of the English Department.

The desire to make English A a course primarily in literature with as little elementary rhetoric as possible has long been expressed by undergraduates and graduates alike and it is possible that the change in leadership of the course may mean a partial realization of that desire. Professor Perry has refused to make any statement with regard to his plans. That he will find himself obliged to give up all his courses except English 41 seems likely.

Administration Progressive

Professor Murray has had charge of English A for the past four years and during that time has introduced many changes in the methods of handling the course, among the most important of which was the establishing of regular introductory lectures three years ago.

In discussing the lectures with a CRIMSON representative Professor Murray stated that nothing else which had occurred during his control of the course was of equal importance.

Points Out Purpose

"One of the complaints most frequently made of Freshman courses," he said "was that they afforded students no opportunity to come into contact with the most important figures in University life, and that handicapped by this ignorance the Freshmen were in no position properly to choose a field of concentration before their Sophomore year. It was in order partially to remove the cause of this complaint that it was decided to make all students in the course meet once a week for lectures which would acquaint them not only with important individual scholars and lecturers but with the aims of the departments of the University."

Prior to Professor Murray's leadership of English A Professor C. N. Greenough '98, Dean of Harvard College, was in charge of the course. During his regime the printed manuals and schedules were introduced.
