The first tribute to Charles William Eliot's memory to come from within the University appears this morning. The Charles William Eliot Memorial Issue of the CRIMSON goes on sale today, at the CRIMSON Building and at all news stands on Harvard Square. It will also be sold in Boston and in New York.
Since early in the fall, this appreciation of the former president of the University has been growing. It is today the sincere attempt on the part of the CRIMSON to express in some manner the feeling of the undergraduate body and of those closely in touch with the life and the work of Mr. Eliot, and their common gratitude for what his life and his work have meant to the University.
Undergraduates Laud Eliot
"The Influence of President Eliot Upon Education in America" is the title of the leading article, by D. S. Gibbs '27, an exhaustive and complete account of the history of Eliot's theories and of their success. F. V. Field '27 has written on "Harvard's Greatest Birthday Party," an account of the celebration of two years ago. J. F. Barnes '27 has written on his personal qualities, and to complete the undergraduate contributions, there is an article by H. W. Foote Jr. '27 on the funeral services that were held last summer.
Although the Charles William Eliot Memorial issue is primarily an undergraduate undertaking, a majority of the contributors are educators of national prominence. Hitherto unpublished letters exchanged between George Herbert Palmer '69, Professor-Emeritus, and Dr. Eliot are included. On one page college and church pay the late President homage in tributes by Bishop William Lawrence '71, Arthur Twining Hadley, President of Yale University, and Byron Satterlee Hurlbut '87, Professor of English in the University.
