CRIMSON WILL OPEN NOVEL COMPETITION

Traditional Eleven-Week Competition Cut to Seven--Date Is Put Forward to Most Convenient Time for 1930

On next Monday night at 7 o'clock the CRIMSON will hold a meeting preliminary to opening competitions in its news, business, and photographic departments for members of the Freshmen class. This step is an innovation in the history of the University daily and has been taken among other reasons, in order to provide a more attractive time for first-year men to compete and to encourage their participation in outside activities.

Will End Before Midyears

A feature of the competition first offered to 1930 men is the fact that it will end in seven weeks, that is, before the start of the Midyear examinations. This is an extraordinary departure from the traditional CRIMSON competitions lasting 11 weeks, and has been inaugurated in order to make the trials less arduous. The seven weeks will not include the Christmas vacation period but will involve seven weeks of actual work.

This novel competition will add a fourth to the list formerly open to each class during its sojourn in the University. The only qualification imposed on candidates is that they be in good standing scholastically. Previous experience is unnecessary.

News Candidates Learn Versatility

The CRIMSON news candidates will be given an opportunity to become acquainted with all departments of journalistic writing. News stories, interviews with illustrious persons, special articles and sport write-ups all require a different mode of expression. The training obtained from this work develops literary ability and versatility in the reporter for the University daily.

Aspirants to the Business Board will find that their work offers valuable business experience. Their duties will consist mainly of soliciting advertisements and doing a negligible amount of office work during the day. The business training allows candidates to come in touch with the system used by a daily newspaper and acquaints them with modern office methods. There will be no night work.

Photographers Initiated Into Art

The Photographic Department candidates will be instructed in the correct methods for taking pictures and will be supplied with Graflex cameras for their work. They will proceed from the study of background and composition in photography to the development and printing of pictures. Elementary knowledge of camera work is helpful in this department, but is no sine qua non.
