SAYS CRIMSON WILL DEFEAT PRINCETON

Drugs Put in Beef Tea Cause Failure of Initial Attempt--Confident of Success Second Time

"I am sure that Harvard will just trample on Princeton and the other football teams after beating Dartmouth," said Gertrude Ederle in an interview with a CRIMSON "reporter yesterday." "You know I won a bet from Helen Wainwright on the Dartmouth game. I felt that Harvard was bound to win, just because it wasn't the newspaper favorite.

The members of the team must have felt the same way I did when I was going to swim the channel. No one thought. I had a chance of getting across. The newspapers were all sympathetic, but skeptical just the same. I made me awfully determined to succeed.

"The first attempt I made, I nearly went to sleep in the water. Some one had pue drugs, in the beef tea I drank before starting. My trainer proved this beyond any doubt. Well, before my second attempt, all my food was prepared by my sister. I was more confident than ever of making the swim, though no one else thought I would.

"The day I started it was awfully rough, but I knew I would get across. These feeling stayed with me. I was laughing and talking to my friends during most of the swim. The thought of failure never occurred to me.

"And that's the way the men in the Stadium must have felt, Saturday. If this can keep that spirit, no one else will beat them, this year. That's why Gene Tinney defeated Dempsey: he paid no attention to other people, but just behind in himself. I think this confidence, or determination, or whatever it is is the most essential thing for an athlete to have."

When asked about her training rules furlong distance swimming, Miss Ederle stated. "Oh, I eat whatever I want whenever I want it. Before swimming the channel, for instance, I had some cornbread, half a broiled chicken, and some coffee. Of course one can't eat in a civilized fashion while touring in theatres. But I still manage to get my three meals a day. I find that is sufficient for training."
