For risking his own life in saving two young boys who had broken through the ice of Leverett Pond on December 26, W. M. Austin '25, former, Crimson hockey star, has been awarded a silver medal, the Massachusetts Humane Society's greatest honor for courage, it was announced last night.
Austin was driving by the side of the pond in an automobile when he saw the two boys struggling in the water. He broke through the thin ice near the shore and swam out to them, bringing first one of them to shore and then returning for the other. By the time he had reached the spot for the second time he was forced to dive under the water and bring the second youth to the surface.
After taking the lads to the nearest hospital, Austin worked for nearly an hour in reviving the second skater before he would take time to get into dry clothes.
