A one hour and twenty-five minute scrimmage was the work alloted to the University football squad yesterday afternoon in preparation for the 1925 curtain raiser which will take place with Van Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday. Teams A, B, and C were all sent in against Coach Knox's scrubs to show what they could do both on the offense and defensive.
The most radical shift which the first line has had took place yesterday when Adie was definitely converted from a center into an end. Adie has been given several trials on the wing, but it was not known that he would be stationed there permanently until yesterday. His shift will make Macomber's performance at center almost certain.
Another conversion yesterday was that of Simonds, regular tackle of last year's Freshman team, who has been playing at end on team C. He has been changed back to his old position and his place at outpost filled by Baldwin.
Cheek in Quarterback Role
The first lineup that was sent in against the Seconds was generaled by Captain Cheek from the quarterback position. Miller played full-back with Crosby and Coady for the half backs. In the line were Saltonstall and Sayles at the ends, Nash and Linder at tackles, Kilgour and Daley at guards, and Macomber in the center. Team B, led by Stafford, went in about the middle of the scrimmage. The backfield was completed by Mosely, Barbee, and Malick, and in the line were Adie and Bradford at ends, Fordyce and Taylor at tackles, Hoague and Bradford at guards, and Turner at center.
The first team opened up the scrimmage in fine style, breaking their way through the Seconds in five plays for the first touchdown. Saltonstall recovered a fumble on the second play from the kick off and gave the red shirts the ball on their opponents 15 yard line. Cheek took the ball inside the tackle and made a very pretty run of 15 yards across the goal line. With no drop kicker in the lineup, Cheek kicked from placement and made the goal.
Kilgour Paves Way for Score
Soon after the next kick the first team again got the jump through Kilgour who smothered a scrub kick five yards behind the goal line. The Seconds kicked out and the first team got the ball on the 40-yard line. Miller made one of his smashing runs off tackle for 10 yards and a first down. This was followed by a pass from Cheek to Miller which netted another 15 yards. The ball was rushed to the 10-yard line and Crosby took it over the goal on a line plunge. Cheek missed his attempt at goal from placement.
Passing Attack Successful
Team A was once more given the ball for an attack in midfield. Cheek made a four yard run and then repeated passes were incompleted. A throw front Coady to Crosby was finally caught and netted a 20-yard gain which was followed by another pass from Cheek to Crosby for a touchdown. Cheek missed the goal.
Penalties for offsides were called rigerously and they were particularly noticeable when team B took the field. Team B's offensive work was almost as good as that of team A. with Mosely as the outstanding figure for his kicking and running. Mosely made the first team B touchdown and successfully kicked goal. He followed this soon after by a long drop kick from the field which went squarely between the bars.
