A renovation of the bridging of the Charles river which will be a material aid to University rowing has recently been announced. It has been decided that the old Cottage Farm bridge, which has long been an eye sore to travelers between Boston and Cambridge, shall be demolished and a modern structure of concrete and iron be erected in its place.
The passageways under the bridge at present are low and inconveniently narrow for the passing shells. Navigation is made doubly difficult by the fact that a low railroad bridge of piles runs diagonally from one corner and makes it necessary to go under both structures. This will be done away with under the new construction, which provides for the cutting of the railroad at the middle of the bridge, thus leaving only one channel to be traversed.
Another feature of the new bridge will be lengthening and heightening of the spans. There will be three openings about 45 feet! wide each and 25 feet high, giving ample space for the free passage of shells.
