Professor J. H. Woods '87, Chairman of the Department of Philosophy and Psychology, will speak at 4.30 o'clock tomorrow at the Phillips Brooks House. An eminent Oriental scholar, he will speak on the subject of Buddhism, its history and doctrine.

Professor Woods was born in Boston and as an undergraduate in the University was business manager of the CRIMSON. He then studied at the Cambridge Theological School, the University of Berlin, Oxford University, and the University of Strassburg. Since 1899 he has taught at Harvard.

He first became interested in Buddhism when studying in Germany with a fellow-student, Vasaharu Anesaki, whose father was a Buddhist priest in Japan. His intimacy with Anesaki continued far many years. They lived together in the house of Professor Deussen of Kiel, studied Sanskrit together and went to India, where they studied in Benares.

Professor Woods further study of Buddhism was pursued in Kashmir and in Japan, where he studied with the foremost Buddhist scholars. His writings on Buddhism have been published in the Harvard Oriental Series, the Journal of the Societe Asiatique and the Journal of the Pali Text Society.
