Assistant Dean George E. Bates, who graduated from the Harvard Business School last June, has just been awarded the first Emery W. Clark Prize of $100 for the best report on a problem in retail store management.
The prize is to be offered each year by C. B. Clark, Comptroller of the J. L. Hudson Company store in Detroit, in memory of his brother.
The problem upon which the report for the prize is based is determined annually by the instructors in charge of the course in Retail Store Management, and is one of the regular problems of the course. The Jury is selected from the staff of the Business School.
Financial budgeting for department stores was the problem on which this year's reports were written. The winner, Mr. Bates, is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is now an Assistant Dean in the Harvard Business School.
