THE CRIME

Rondeau Metropolitan

In Harvard Square, when lorries ply,

And noonday clanguors wrack the sky;

When purring demons streak the pave,

Engulfing, like a tidal wave,

What flotsam 'hap the winds blow by;

Fain would I pause with anguished eye

To view the maelstrom ere I try

A passage. E'en how quake the brave,

In Harvard Square!

Since few less timorous than I

Emerge alive, on then, to die!

But stay: look well my corpse to save!

Let the Rotunda be my grave--

But let my hallowed impress lie

In Harvard Square!

Times do change!

Holy Chrysanthemum Curley

The tale is told of an ancient king

Who swore by his good right hand,

And still the curse of the "great horned spoon"

Wakes memories through the land.

But bozos and boomerangs, those are new,

As muttered in accents surly.

Are they the cuss words of hard boiled Marines

Or conventional curses of Curley?

I was early taught to work as well as play;

My life has been one long, happy holiday.

Full of work, and full of play--

I dropped the worry on the way--

And God was good to me every day.   --Springfield Republican.

Written at 8, and 6 Months   (By Johnnie Mockefeller.)

Mama tells me I must work as well as play,

And I'll be happy as can be every day.

Work and play, each blessed day--

I'll grow up big and rich that way,

For God will be good to me every day.

Austute note from the high minded "Eli Book" (New Haven):

Sighed dismally over her fgt.

Crying "I am so stout,

When I travel about

I pay overwgt. charge in the frgt."
