LA FOLLETTE BACKERS IN STORMY SESSION

Describes La Follette as "Man of the Hour"--Election of Coolidge Would Be National Tragedy, He Says

The liberal elements of the University last evening crowded the Faculty Room of the Union and amid a boisterous business meeting, following the speech of Professor C. R. Skinner G. '17, organized the Harvard La Follette-Wheeler club.

With true democratic spirit the assemblage debated the method of organization in noisy discord while almost everyone present offered an opnion until L. R. Brown '26 was finally elected president. The other officers were chosen in short order with J. G. Curtis 3L, as vice-president, G. D. Leighton '26 as secretary, and J. H. Weiss '25 as treasurer.

Will Draw Members From Other Clubs

Believing a large part of the membership of the present Harvard Republican and Democratic clubs to be leaning toward La Follette at this time, the new club voted to accept for the next five days as members only ex-members of one of the two older political clubs. After Saturday the club membership will be thrown open to the entire University and anyone may join. In the debate on this measure on the floor of the meeting it was freely predicted that dozens of members could be drawn from either of the other clubs with slight effort.

Election of Coolidge Tragedy

Declaring that it would be a national tragedy to elect a man whose party was mixed up in the oil scandals as was President Coolidge's, Professor Skinner of Tufts College, preceding the business meeting, flayed the older parties and painted a glowing picture of La Follette as the "men of the hour". He stated that like MacDonald in England, La Follette was the most despised man in the country during the war but was looked to now as the only progressive leader on the horizon whom the liberal forces of the country could follow.

G. E. Brown 3L, temorary chairman of last night's meeting, read a letter which had been received from the Democratic club asking the La Follette supporters to unite on Davis to defeat Coolidge. The club voted unanimously to decline the offer and empowered the officers to draft a vigorous reply today.

Following their election, the officers picked an executive and campaign committee consisting of Samuel Becker 3L, Gardner Cowles Jr. '26, H. A. Jacobs '26, Carl A. Person 2L, and P. T. L. Putnam '25
