"Go out after the hard nuts; they're the ones you want to crack", was the advice of Mr. Arthur Beane '12, former graduate secretary of the Phillips Brooks House Association and present treasurer of the Graduate Advisory Committee, to the 81 collectors who assembled last night for dinner in the Phillips Brooks House to inaugurate the annual drive for funds.
"This institution is not confined within the four walls of the University", continued Mr. Beane, "it extends wherever Harvard men are, and no one can make too great a sacrifice to help along this work."
The imperative need that every man in the University should make some contribution toward the $4000 fund that will go to pay the expenses of the Association, was the prevalent note in all the speeches. B. F. Rice-Bassett '25, president of the Phillips Brooks House, introduced the speakers, and himself explained the undergraduate attitude toward the drive.
Mr. W. J. Bingham '16, former president of the Association and famous as a former track coach, spoke of the Phillips Brooks House as "the soul of the University" and claimed that every student "should be proud to help, with a contribution, those men who are, with their time and energy, carrying out the vision to which this House is dedicated."
Mr. Beane spoke briefly and was followed by R. H. Field '26, treasurer of the Association, who outlined the drive. All the collectors and those students who have not been reached personally should report at the Crimson Building tonight or tomorrow night, when the drive will end, between 9 and 10.30 o'clock, when the committee will hold office hours.
Following the dinner, a reception was held at which about two hundred members of the class of 1928 attended.
