The fall baseball season will open this afternoon at 3 o'clock when University and Freshman candidates will report at the Locker Building. Fred F. Mitchell, reengaged as battery coach, will address the men. Coach Mahan, busy with backs and kickers on the football squad, probably will be unable to attend the initial meeting.
Equipment will be distributed later in the afternoon, and active practice will begin at 3 o'clock tomorrow at the University Field. Candidates will continue to report as long as the weather permits. Two distinct teams, each having its own captain, will later be formed and play daily games with picked teams.
Few Veterans Available
A number of baseball veterans will not be available for practice, as they are needed for the football squad. Captain Hammond, M. A. Cheek 26, A. W. Samborski '25, Phillip Spalding '25 and A. G. Rogers '25 are lettermen who will be absent from baseball practice for this reason. Lee Todd '26, pacemaker for the Crimson sluggers last season, and J. E. Toulmin '25, second choice pitcher, are the only veterans who will be out for the squad this fall. However, some very good substitutes are available to help take the places of the men drawn out by football. Cordingley, off the gridiron squad because of an old injury, and Booth of the 1927 Freshman nine, will help with the pitching. Gates and Phelps, players on the 1927 team, Nash, Burns, and Herrman will probably report to Mitchell. Infielders Slayton, Rice, Keene, Knowlton, Mann, and Field of first and second team experience, should be on hand, as should Burgess and Amsden, outfielders.
