CRIMSON PLAYGOER

The Boston Stock Company Presents a Laugh-a-Minute Comedy, and Rings Up a High Score--Ann Mason Features

"The Alarm Clock" was this week's offering of tire Boston Stock Company. Although rather slow in getting started, the actors got into the swing of the thing by the middle of the first act; and carried it through with exceptional success.

Mrs. Grace Dunmore is represented as a masterful woman who cannot get along with only one husband. She sees her latest flame, Bobby Brandon, leading a gay night life and ignoring her. Jealous, she gets a Doctor to convince Brandon he is in a serious condition of health, and that he must settle down and keep better hours. She sends for Brandon's nephew, together with the latter's fiancee and her mother, to come from Kamm's Corners, and keep Bobby out of mischief. They come, but instead of converting Bobby to family life they are all converted to his way of living. Mrs. Dunmore is frustrated. The situation presents a great opportunity for comedy and Avery Hopwood takes full advantage of it.

Ann Mason's characterization of Mary was the particular bright bit of acting. The St. James is to be congratulated upon securing this exceptionally gifted and versatile actress. Anna Layng was convincing as Mrs. Kent, in the first act, but the change from a country church organist to a "night blooming Sirius" seemed a little overdrawn even for a farce. Walter Gilbert did his usual fine job with the leading part, and the supporting cast played well. A very entertaining play, with plenty of laughs.
