Coach Dempsey put his Freshman hockey squad through a strenuous workout yesterday at the Arena. The practice lasted for an hour and a half before the University squad took the ice. Dempsey was assisted by last year's University coach, Alfred Winsor '02, who showed the first year men some of the important fundamentals. The first cut in the squad was made last night.
The first hour of yesterday's practice session consisted of shooting goals and passing the puck by several forward combinations that were sent against two backs and a goal guard. The combination of W. G. Saltonstall at left wing, J. P. Chase at center, and George Crawford at right wing was among the best.
A half-hour scrimmage was ordered by Dempsey to finish the practice. The coach made frequent substitutions and every man on the squad was given a chance to show his ability. George Crawford, former star athlete at St. Mark's and quarterback on the Freshman football team, distinguished himself by shooting several hard goals after sprints down the ice. W. G. Saltonstall, who played at Exeter, exhibited great speed and skilful stickwork in taking the puck down the ice.
