A cut and a scrimmage were the chief features in the practice of the first squad yesterday afternoon at Soldiers Field.
Fourteen new black jerseys were given out at the Locker Building today to five halfbacks, five quarterbacks, two ends and two line men who had survived Coach Fisher's first cut of the University squad on September 21. Fifty-two men now remain, but of these, Braden, Doherty, and Hammond are as yet ineligible to play. There are therefore less than fifty men available for the opening game with Rhode Island State next Saturday.
Coincident with the cut came the first definite division of the squad into A, B, C, and D teams.
Early in the afternoon team C scrimmaged the second team, while the remainder of the squad went through drills and signal practice.
Shortly after the first two teams of the squad took the field. A team lined up with Gordon and Hill at ends, Dunker and Eastman at tackles, Captain Hubbard at one guard, Littlefield replacing Donovon at the other, and Kernan at center with Lee at quarterback and Colburn, Pfaffmann and Hammond as backs. Team B was as follows: in the backfield, Maher, Cheek, Howe, and Spalding, Evans and Crosby at the ends, R. L. Hubbard and Hobson tackles, Daniell and C. H. Bradford guards, and Greenough center.
For more than twenty minutes these teams scrimmaged back and forth across the field without much regard to downs. Although the ball was in the possession of team A most of the time no touchdowns were scored during the period of play.
Later the regulars gave way to their understudies: Adie replaced Littlefield on team A, while E. H. Bradford, Beals, and Combs alternated at the ends of team B.
An entireely new backfield of McGlone at quarterback and Rogers, Cordingly and Lock wood next went back to the team A line and from then on the replacements and substitutions became very rapid.
There will be practice tomorrow at two o'clock, with possibilities for a second scrimmage then.
