In speaking yesterday in Robinson Hall on the drawings submitted in the recent competition for the design of the projected Chicago Tribune Building and now on exhibition in Robinson Hall, Professor J. J. Haffner first outlined the requirements of the competition. He then proceeded to discuss the elements necessary for a successful design. Of these unity and character are of equal importance in producing the desired effect. In respect to the character of buildings Professor Haffner mentioned two modern types of architecture, the Gothic suggesting ideals and inspiration, and the solid type used in municipal buildings which gives an idea of utility and permanence.

In closing the speaker stated that the competition, which drew 200 designs had been extremely useful in indicating the different schools of architecture in the world today.

The first prize was won by a design collaborated on by Mr. John Mead Howell '91 and Mr. R. M. Hood, associate architects in New York City.
