A record squad has turned out for fencing this fall and 46 of these candidates are Freshmen. At present the University fencing squad is composed of 12 men, several of whom are veterans.
The University fencing team which won the "Iron Man" Intercollegiate Fencing Trophy offered by Colonel R. M. Thompson last spring in New York has returned to the college this season intact. It is composed of three Seniors, E. L. Lane '24, fencing captain this year, E. H. Lane '24 and Roland Fleer '24.
Coach Danguy has not such an easy task in developing a foils team for none of last year's regulars are available. On the squad is Paul Davies '24 and R. A. Durham '25, assistant manager of the team, both substitutes in past seasons. Three of last year's Freshman squad are also out for the team. They are Howard Finney '26, A. R. Allen '26, and Noel Morss '26, who won the Freshman tournament last spring.
Coach Danguy, who has directed fencing at the University for five years, is being assisted in coaching by Burke Boyce '22 and several members of last year's team.
He intends to cut the Freshman squad to eight men at the end of the week to simplify the development of a three-man team which will meet Andover and the Tech and Yale Freshman swordsmen during the winter. These will be the first outside matches which a Freshman team has had in many years.
