RECORD TURN-OUT OPENS CRIMSON FENCING SEASON

LONG DISCONTINUED FRESHMAN TEAM TO BE RESTORED

The largest squad in the history of fencing reported to Coach J. L. Danguy at a meeting of candidates in the Fencing Room of the Hemenway Gymnasium yesterday afternoon.

Over fifty men signed up for fencing and will begin their instruction under Coach Danguy on Friday. In addition to these newcomers are 12 men returned from last year's championship team which defeated the Army, Navy, and Yale fencers at the Hotel Astor last April. The list of veterans includes Captain E. H. Lane '24 and his brother E. L. Lane '24, who won first and second places in the University foils championship last May. Roland Fleer '24, Paul Davier '24, F. W. Saunders '24, R. M. Morrison '24, and R. A. Durham '25.

The fact that all the members of the present team will graduate this June, was stressed by Manager Fleer. Burke Boyce '22, former captain of the team, spoke of the history of fencing and its value as a scientific sport.

The first Freshman team for many years is to be organized this season in view of the fact that almost 30 first year men have reported for fencing, it was announced by Captain Lane. The new team will be under the direction of assistant manager R. A. Durham '25 and will terminate its season in a meet with the Yale Freshman fencers.
