Displaying the best brand of hockey that it has shown this year, the University sextet overcame the Yale hockey team on Saturday at the New Haven Arena by a score of 3 to 2. Distinctly outplaying the Elis in the first period, when Captain Owen scored once, faltering in the second period, when Captain Bulkley of the Elis tied the score, and then holding the Blue skaters scoreless in the third regular period, the Crimson team forced the game into extra periods. In the first of these, O'Hearn caged the puck for Yale, only to have the score again tied by Owen on a short, sharp shot past Jenkins. The third overtime period, a "sudden death", in which the first team to score wins the game, saw Hill, substituting for Beals at right wing, receive a pass from Crosby and snap it past Jenkins, making the final score of the game, and winning the contest for the University.
Crimson Shows Renewed Life
The Crimson skaters showed, throughout the contest, the dash and alertness that had been notably absent against the Orange and Black a week before. Flint, in the net for the University, had only 13 stops to make, as compared with 28 by Jenkins.
The first period showed a marked superiority on the part of the University. Time after time, Jenkins was called upon to stop the shots of the Crimson stickmen, while Flint had but little to worry him. Near the end of the session, during a scrimmage in front of the Blue net, Captain Owen slipped the puck past Jenkins for the first tally of the contest.
Yale Aggressive in Second Period
The Crimson skaters found themselves outplayed by their opponents in the second session. The fact that the New Haven Arena is somewhat narrower than the Boston Arena may have given the Elis a considerable advantage, for the Crimson forward line seemed cramped in the narrower space. The only score of this period was made by Bulkley on a pass from Turnbull, substitute right wing. Attempts to score by both sides proved futile during the rest of the period.
The third session found both teams frantically endeavoring to break the deadlock, but each failing to break through the defence of the other. At times it looked as if the University would score, and then again Yale seemed to have a momentary advantage, but neither could cage the puck.
Agree on Over-Time Periods
On account of the tie, the teams agreed to stage two five-minute overtime periods, and, in case the tie remained unbroken, one "sudden death" period. The first of these overtime sessions found O'Hearn scoring on a fast drive from the left lane, after he had skated nearly the full length of the rink. The University skaters began the second overtime period with the score 2 to 1 against them. The session was marked by the Crimson's continued attempts to score, led by Owen's persistent dashes down the rink. Finally, just before the end of the period, Owen, on a face-off in front of the Yale goal, snapped the puck home. As soon as the "sudden death" period began, the University took the offensive. Forcing the play continually, the Crimson skaters kept the puck in Blue territory, until a short pass to Bill from Crosby brought about the winning score.
