Although leading by four runs at the end of the fourth inning, the University second team succumbed to the Brown scrubs Saturday afternoon 6 to 4 on Soldiers Field.
The Crimson players out-batted the visitor 12 hits to eight. Young pitched the first five innings for the Crimson, allowing only two singles and striking out six batters. Brown took his place in the sixth and was hit seven times. Neubauer went all nine innings for Brown and kept the Crimson down to 12 singles.
The University men started the scoring in the opening inning when Gorman singled, was advanced by Lucas and singled, was advanced by Lucas, and came home on Cooper's single. Two more came in the second, Keegan singling, stealing second, going to third on a wild pitch, and completing his speedy circuit by stealing home. Young brought in the second run soon afterwards. He walked, reached third on an error, and finally came home when Ross hit. The latter added another tally in the fourth, reaching second on a single and a stolen base. Gorman brought him home with a neat single over second. Neubauer tightened after Gorman's hit and retired the Crimson in one, two three order for the remaining five innings.
The Providence nine started its attack in the fifth when Sargent led off with a single and was sacrificed around the bags. But the hitting spree came in the sixth when two singles and a triple noted two runs. Patterson tied the score in the seventh when he singled, stole his way to third, and raced safely home on a wild pitch by Brown, thus tying the score.
The tally which first put Brown in the lead came in the eighth. Sargent singled, stole second, and Neubauer's single over short was long enough to bring him home. Hoffman scored the final run with two out in the ninth when a long two-bagger, a passed ball, and a wild pitch took him safely around the circuit.
The fielding by both nines was clean and fast throughout the game, the visitors winning by bunched hits and heady base-running.
