Complete plans for the final bouts of the University boxing tournament to be held on Friday, March 17, were given out yesterday afternoon. The Boxing Commission has issued a license to the management allowing the contest to take place in Hemenway Gymnasium and has agreed to supply the judges. Mr. Fred Wood will again take up the duties of timer, while Mr. D. V. Kelley and Coach Larry Conley have been appointed announcer and referee respectively.
Arrangements are now in progress for providing seats for 1,500 spectators and in addition standing room will be obtainable. Reserved seats will be arranged on the main floor of the gymnasium around the ring and on the balcony, so that, in order to obtain a favorable position, the management has advised that tickets be bought early. Reserved seats may be obtained today for $1.00 both at the H. A. A. and at Leavitt and Peirce's, while standing room will be on sale at 50 cents.
Informal Bouts' Earlier
Though not all men have signed up in the blue books, about 50 entries are expected before the preliminaries are run off next week. The date for the first bout has not been definitely settled as it is impossible to judge how the entries will be distributed. If the several classes are nearly equally filled, however, it is probable that the opening contests will be staged on Wednesday, March 15. These bouts will be purely informal, but should there be proper accommodations members of the University will be admitted to all the preliminaries.
Many experienced boxers will participate in the tournament, and of these Edward Eagan 1L. is the best known. He was captain of the Yale team last year and was honored by being selected to represent the United States in the Olympic Games. By winning his bout he has become amateur light heavyweight champion of the world, but he will fight in the heavyweight class on March 17. Howard Townsend Jr. '23 and Benoni Lockwood '22, who held the title last year, are the other promising contenders for the honors.
