Dr. Howe gave his three University crews a long workout yesterday afternoon, taking them down as far as the dam at the end of the Basin. The afternoon was devoted primarily to work with the strokes and at the end of practice it was announced that Walter Amory '24, E. S. Matthews '23, and S. N. Brown '24 had been retained for further work. Today the three eights will go out with only one change in the make-up of any boat, W. F. Lewis '23 going in at bow in Crew C in place of Benjamin Harris '23.
Dr. Howe did not personally cox any of the crews yesterday afternoon but directed the work of the men, and especially the strokes, from the launch. He alternated the five candidates for the stroke position and had each group row first at a paddle and then at a faster rate, finally reaching a beat of about 30. After each one of these periods the strokes were shifted and the next group went through the same procedure.
Final Cuts by April 3
Having settled to a certain extent, at least, the question of strokes, Dr. Howe, the coaches, and the committees will devote the rest of the week to a careful consideration of the 24 men that have been retained with a view to a final cut by April 3.
Under the daily supervision of Coach Herbert Haines, the 15 organized 1925 crews have been engaging in strenuous workouts during the past week in preparation for the races today and tomorrow. This afternoon at 4.45 o'clock numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 of the autumn material crews will be pitted against one another, the winner to enter the contest tomorrow with the first seven yearling boats--A. C. M. numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 and the three football crews.
