The Yale two-mile relay team defeated the University team; M. I. T. outran the Crimson one-mile team; and the Harvard 1925 team was out-distanced by the Eli Freshman quartet, at the B. A. A. games, held Saturday night at the Arena. Despite the results of the three races, the University team showed much improvement over last year's team at this stage.
J. A. McCarthy '22 ran lead-off for the University on the long-distance team, against F. W. Hilles of Yale. Hilles had the pole and made the first corner, but McCarthy was right on his heels, and showed that he had come back from last year's slump, by holding this position behind the Yale flier until the end of the six laps, when he was only a yard behind. M. H. Wilson, taking the place of Campbell on the Yale team, was second, and opened up a 35-yard lead over W. F. Eaton '22. J. W. Burke '23, running third man for the Crimson, instead of anchor, against E. Vander Pyl was able to make up all but five yards of this on his opponent, and J. E. Merrill '24 started the final turn close on the heels of M. K. Douglas, the star of last year's Blue Freshman team. The half-mile was too much for Merrill, whose regular distance is the 440, and in the last two laps Vander Pyl was able to put 50 yards between the two, finishing easily in 8 minutes 13 1-5 seconds, a moderately fast time.
Same Story in Mile
The story was much the same in the race between the veteran Tech quartet and the Crimson one-mile relay. Richard Chute '22 led off for the University and took the first corner, but allowed Poole to pass him on the back stretch, and from that time the M. I. T. runners were never headed. Poole handed over a nominal lead to W. L. Smith, who running against W. C. Bennett '23 increased it to 20 yards. H. W. Howe '22 lost 30 yards more to W. B. Gurney, and J. W. Quinn '23, running anchor for the University, was able to make up only ten of this against Yardley Chittick, the Tech opptain, who crossed the line in last time, 3 minutes, 35 2-5 seconds.
In the Freshman race, T. R. Hull of the Crimson fought bard, giving only two yards to J. Gelifus, but G. Page increased this lead to ten yards over L. L. Robb. A. F. Jones, running third for the Freshmen, lost 15 yards more to R. W. Hodgkins, the Eli runner, and H. T. Dunker, the Crimson anchor, lost ten more to C. Page of Yale, who finished in 3 minutes, 41 seconds.
Schoolboy Wins Hurdle
The 45-yard hurdle race contained several surprises, E. J. Thompson, winner of the event last year, missed a train and did not arrive in time to compete. In the third heat F. M. Avery of Andover barely led C. R. Hauers '23 over the tape, both qualifying, and R. S. Whitney '22 qualified in the fourth heat. Handers was shut out in the semi-finals by Avery and Whitney, who finished in this order in the finals, with Harris of Dartmouth third. The time was 6 2-5 seconds.
Vinton Chapin '23 qualified in his preliminary heat in the Major Briggs 40-yard dash, but lost in the semi-finals. The finals were won by Loren Morohieon of the Illinois A. C. Lever of Pennsylvania coming second with Gomine of Yale third.
K. P. Libbey of Dartmouth, with a 9 inch handicap, won the pole-vault at 12 feet two inches.
