ENGLISH REMAINS FAVORITE CHOICE FOR CONCENTRATION

Romance Languages, Chemistry and History Also Popular--Little Change From Last Year in Relative Interest

English literature retains its popularity this year as a subject for concentration or specialization. Statistics compiled by the Committee on the Choice of Electives show that 479 men have chosen English as their field of concentration, in which they must pass a general examination in their Senior year. This is a larger number than have selected any other field. Economics comes second, with 358 men.

Romance languages rank third in popularity, with 182 concentrators. Chemistry takes fourth place, with 169 men; History is fifth, with 160; Government follows, with 80; Mathematics has 70 concentrators; 63 men are concentrating in the field which combines History and Literature.

An outstanding fact about the statistics of concentration for the year is that the order of popularity of the eight most popular subjects is exactly the same as last year, showing that there has been little change in undergraduate tastes and interests in this respect. The general examination was in force last year for the first time for men concentrating in English, but this fact has not decreased the number of men choosing the subject as their main field of work.

The total of concentrations in all subject are as follows: English,  479 Economics,  358 Romance languages,  182 Chemistry,  169 History,  160 Government,  80 Mathematics,  70 History and literature,  63 Biology,  53 Physics,  42 Philosophy and psychology,  41 Fine Arts,  40 Classics,  37 Geology,  22 German,  18 Music,  13 Social Ethics,  13 Engineering Sciences,  10 Anthropology,  5 Semitic,  2 Mathematics and Education,  1 Literature,  1 Undetermined,  48

The total number concentrating in Engineering Sciences does not represent the real popularity of engineering, as most men whose tastes lie in this direction enter the Engineering School.
