Five Yale crews are now working out daily on the Housatonic River at Derby under the supervision of Coach Edward Leader, former mentor of the University of Washington eight.
About 50 men, 17 of whom were members of last year's Freshman squad, go to the Housatonic each day. Comparatively light workouts have been in order the crews rowing about four miles at the low stroke of 18. The purpose has been to give the men a chance to thoroughly familarize themselves with the various points of Coach Leader's system.
The Seating of the Blue crew, the first boat, is as follows:
Stoddard, cox.; Ewing, stroke; Haines 7, Rockefeller 6, Goodwin 5, Sheffield 4, Bigelow 3, Captain pelly 2, Davidson, bow; Russell, who rowed in the first boat against the University last year, is alternating with Davidson.
The Freshman and class crews have been making good progress under coaches Murphy and Moore at the harbor. From the work which the Freshman oarsmen have done on the machines, Coach Murphy has been able to pick four crews. Coach Moore is in charge of the class crews and at present has fifteen eights working under him.
