TO TUNE UP BASKETBALL MEN BY GAMES WITH 1925

Three First Teams of University Squad to Oppose Quintets Picked From Coach Tolbert's Men--Cut Leaves 25 Men on Freshman Teams

In the final stiff scrimmage before the contest with Worcester Tech Saturday evening, tomorrow afternoon Coach Wachter will send his three first teams against three quintets chosen from Coach Tolbert's Freshman squad. The game which will be played at the Freshman athletic building at 4 o'clock will give practically every man on both squads an opportunity to get into the tussle and will probably be a large factor in determining the first team men who will be sent against the Engineers at the end of the week.

The 1925 squad was cut to 25 members yesterday, after the men had engaged in a stiff 40-minute scrimmage in which three separate teams took part. Coach Tolbert's Team A defeated Team B in a hard-fought struggle by a score of 21-15, the victory resulting largely from the consistent work of Samson Merriam and A. W. Samborski, at forward and guard respectively. Only one change was made during the scrimmage, when D. P. Loker, guard on Team B, took the place of R. S. Quivey, who held that position on the first five. The line-ups of the two quintets follows:

Following this session Team A took on Team C, and found no difficulty in breaking through their opponents for an 8-2 victory.

In preparation for the contest with Watertown High with which the yearling five will open its season next week, Coach Tolbert is laying special emphasis on the various scrimmage formations, such as the roving back, the five-man defense, short passing and back passing. Although the squad is still too large to judge accurately the candidates for the various positions, in the workouts so far Merriam has proved himself one of the speediest forwards on the squad and in addition is an accurate scorer from the foul line, while J. E. Bunting and J. L. Scully are also strong contenders for the forward berth. On the defense Samborski seems to be leading the race although Quivey and Loker will probably push him hard.
