HOLY CROSS VICTOR OVER QUINTET, 40-24

McLaughlin Stars for Mid-State Team--Gordon and Miller Do Well for University

Sixteen points was the margin of victory of the crack Holy Cross basketball team over the Crimson quintet at Worcester last night, the final score being 40 to 24. After a neck and neck contest during most of the opening period, the Purple five finally succeeded in breaking away into a commanding lead which from the final minutes of the opening session it never again relinquished.

Due to the fact that there was no umpire to help in the refereeing, the play of both teams was very rough. Only a very few fouls were called, however, Holy Cross getting four free attempts, while the University team tried ten times for free goals. McLaughlin at center for Holy Cross proved the high point scorer of the contest, his great height enabling him to tally five times from the floor. Gordon of the University and Riopel of the Purple also proved star performers, both getting four goals from play while the former made four scores from the foul-line for his side. Although not starting the contest, Miller played his defensive role well during the final period when he was in the game.

For the first ten minutes of the opening half it looked as if it were anyone's game. Only a minute after the opening whistle, Riopel caged the first basket from the floor, but Gordon immediately evened up the count for the University. For many minutes the lead see-sawed back and forth, neither side seeming able to gain any decisive advantage until, with the period about half over, the Worcester team finally, found its power and jumped ahead, the half ending with the score 25-14 in favor of the Purple.

Although the University team staged a strong come-back in the last period, it was unable to check the Holy Cross attack and while holding the mid-state team to 15 points was only able to tally ten scores. Throughout the contest the foul shooting of the Crimson was excellent, eight points having been made out of ten trials.
