Communication

The Unrepresented Sixth

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

In a recent CRIMSON appear some suggestions for the Freshman elections--all very fine as far as they go; but, obviously, the fact that a man belongs to the sixth-part of the class that does not live in the dormitories should not bar him from the consideration of the Student Council when it "nominates men from each of the three halls for members of a Freshman interdormitory council." A man who goes out for some sport--a major sport, for instance--will get to know many fellows; he will meet others in class; he will have still other friends from his preparatory school days; but he has committed the sin of not living in a dormitory. The proposal speaks of "investing the governing power in a body which will be representative of the dormitories." Why not speak of "investing the governing power in a body which will be representative of the class"?

Also, it would materially help the "indifference" if the elections were held in the Yard, where everyone is passing--or if they were held both at the dormitories and in the Yard. It is a disgraceful fact that many do not care enough about their elections to take a short walk. At least it would be worth while to see if these delinquents would fall into line if they didn't have to exert themselves too much; also, they would have no "alibi" for not voting. J. K. WHITE '24.

(The suggestion of representation for the men who live outside the dormitories is a good one. This could be taken care of by increasing the membership of the committee to five,--three members elected from the dormitories, one man elected by the members outside the dormitories, and a chairman elected from the class at large.--ED.)
