NO SCRIMMAGE YET FOR UNIVERSITY HOCKEY MEN

Crowded Rink Forces Delay in Getting Down to Real Work--E. L. Bigelow '21 in Charge of Squad During Coach Claflin's Absence

In taking charge of the University hockey squad yesterday afternoon, E. L. Bigelow '21, captain of last year's team, who is acting as coach in Coach Claflin's absence, gave the men no scrimmage, concentrating entirely on the fundamentals of the game. About 70 Crimson men shared the ice with the 50 members of the M. I. T. squad, and consequently there was no room available for scrimmaging. In all probability, the squad will be restricted to elementary drills until some time next week.

From 5 to 5.30 o'clock the first squad was on the ice, while in the following half hour, the second squad went through their work-out. The drill consisted mainly of carrying the puck down the ice in pairs and then in threes, while different combinations of defense men were tried.

One of the tasks before the coaching staff this year is that of filling the position of goal, which is at present entirely open, due to the fact that neither Jabish Holmes Jr. '21 nor C. S. Stillman '22, the contenders for the position of goal last winter, are back. Among the strongest candidates for this position now are J. G. Flint '23, R. R. Higgins '22 and H. C. Janin '23, although C. B. Barnes Jr. '25, L. F. Brigham '24, D. S. Holder '24, and R. S. Hubbard Jr. '24 are also possible contenders.

In the defense, many combinations were used in an effort to bring out the particularly strong players. The men who showed up especially well were H. F. Colt '23, W. E. Crosby Jr. '24, J. H. Dempsey '23, Mitchell Gratwick '22, S. C. Graves '24, and Captain George Owen Jr. '23
