THE CRIMSON PLAYGOER

Boston Stock Company Seen This Week in Roi Cooper Megrue's Comedy--Play the Best Seen So Far

Much the best thing we have seen at the St. James! "Under Cover" by Roi Cooper Megrue is a play of thrills, of Lumor and mysterious identities. To say that it was well acted is hardly sufficient. Whether the Boston Stock Company suited the play, or the reverse, at any rate, the result was an excellent performance of a melodrama that meets the exact needs of a stock company.

"Under Cover" does not seem to have suffered from years of retirement, even the problem of who's who being as perplexing as when we first saw William Courtenay in the riddle. Be-derbied custom inspectors are fascinating creatures, especially when they soften to $30,000 bribes! And who will tire of the clever crook and the daring detective--the be-all and end-all of adventure in Long Island Society--stage version? In addition to the thrills there is plenty to laugh at, by which we mean genuine laughter.

As usual when we come to the honor roll Leona Powers leads all the rest. She has a way of letting the St. James productions revolve about her, apparently thriving under this treatment. Viola Roach was splendid as Mrs. Harrington. It would be folly to sort out the others of the cast. The reason for a smooth, lively, interesting performance is that no part is done badly. We would go so far is to say that "Under Cover" was altogether satisfactory.
