That winter track is daily proving more popular was shown by the fact that 17 new men reported yesterday for the University squad and 12 for the Freshman team. Although this brings the total number of men out for track up to 129, the squads are not so large as the coaches expected and especially is there a dearth of material for the field events. The management has announced that any new men who wish to report and to gain the experience which winter work affords, should see Coach Donovan at once; Freshmen should report to Mr. Geer at Weld 4 before reporting on the field.
As winter track practice is held primarily to condition the men for the more intensive work in the spring, and to bring out the relative ability of the different candidates, there will be no cut in the squad. If possible, every one will be given the opportunity to take part in some meet and consequently secure much experience which will prove invaluable in the spring.
May Meet Tech January 29
Plans are now under way to arrange a dual meet with the M. I. T. University and Freshmen track teams to be held on the board track on Soldiers Field on January 29. The regular winter season will close in March with a Winter Handicap Meet on the board track at Soldiers Field. Every man on the squad may compete and the winners will be awarded medals.
At the H. A. A. at 1.05 o'clock this afternoon, the competition for the positions of manager and assistant manager of the Freshman track team will start with a meeting for all candidates. The plans for the season and the details of the work will be outlined. The competition will last two months, ending about the time of the Winter Handicap Meet, to be held in March. The successful candidates will take charge of the 1924 track team during the spring, and the manager will be awarded his numerals. The work will be arranged so as not to interfere in any way with examinations during the midyear period.
