In a one-sided contest yesterday afternoon on the Divinity Field courts, the University tennis team wound up its season with a defeat at the hands of the University of California by the score of 5 matches to 1. The match was rather slow because of the heat, and the University players were outclassed, though in one match, between Rothchild of California and R. N. Bradley '22, three sets were played. The only Crimson victory was gained by Captain G. W. Helm '20 and D. P. Robinson Jr.'20 over Bates and Levy, 7-5, 6-4. Due to the absence of L. A. deTurenne '21 and J. B. Fenno Jr. '21 at the Intercollegiates at Hartford, the team played in a different order from any used in previous contests: Helm, Robinson, Bradley and Rowe. The best match of the afternoon was that between D. P. Robinson Jr. '20 and Levy, the opposing star, the latter winning in long straight sets, 12-10, 6-3.
The summary follows:
Singles--Bates (California) defeated Helm (Harvard), 6-3, 6-3; Levy (California) defeated Robinson (Harvard), 12-10, 6-3; Rothchild (California) defeated Bradley (Harvard), 6-4, 4-6, 8-6; Martin (California) defeated Rowe (Harvard), 6-1, 6-1.
Doubles--Helm and Robinson (Harvard) defeated Bates and Levy (California), 7-5, 6-4; Rothchild and Martin (California) defeated Bradley and Rowe (Harvard), 6-3, 6-3.
