To the Editors of the CRIMSON:--
Once again the need of some kind of coordination in settling dates for undergraduate activities has been brought forcibly before us. The first performance of the Harvard Dramatic Club's spring production was held on last Tuesday evening. President Lowell's address was arranged for the same time by the entertainment committee of the Harvard Union. Although the date for this address was announced long after the publication of the Dramatic Club's dates, I do not feel that either party was to blame. It merely goes to show that if Harvard intends to have her undergraduate activities patronized by undergraduates, she must have some central booking agency where every manager can apply for a specific date and be reasonably sure that he will not be in competition with any other event.
Two other notable examples of this same lack of coordination have occurred within a very few months. The first one took place shortly before Easter vacation, when two organizations, planning to make trips during the recess, discovered that they were playing in the same city. Obviously this meant that one organization or the other, perhaps both, would suffer greatly, and one of them was forced to change its itinerary at considerable trouble and expense. Today the University debating team meets its opponents from the University of Washington, and the Seniors hold their annual picnic. No matter how little the average undergraduate might be interested in debating, he would glady help to give the visiting debaters a fitting welcome after their long journey, but under the present arrangements--or rather lack of arrangements--the entire Senior class is prevented from attending.
The time to remedy this grave situation in our undergraduate life is now, when the various managers are making up their schedules for next year. If this is within the province of the Student Council, does it not seem desirable that it should at once appoint a committee through which all undergraduate activities must be booked. W. V. M.
