The narrowness of college men and women and their lack of perspective on the world at large, has been the cause of much unfavorable comment in the leading magazines of today, even to the point of discrimination against the newly graduated students.

This attitude has caused much speculation on the part of college men throughout the country, as evidenced by the editorial concern of the leading eastern and middle western college dailies. The different views presented are interesting. Some believe that it is the result of the war and unsettled conditions, other attribute it to the tendency in recent years toward too many social activities, while a few hold that the modern college student comes to his Alma Mater without any definite purpose and never acquired one, or as one editor puts it "college-bred seems to mean a four year's loaf." However, they all agree that it is a fact that college men and women are narrow.

We would hesitate to make such a sweeping condemnation. However, we do offer this criticism for whatever it is worth. There are always men and women entering the University with strong partisan views, occasioned by their family affiliations and their previous environment, their preparatory school life, their family affiliations and their home discussions. We wish to urge men coming to college with too strongly formed pre-possessions, prejudices, and preconceptions not to be hasty in wishing to foist their opinions on others.

A university is the laboratory of truth. It is an experimental station. He who would learn in this laboratory the eternal immutable laws of truth, must adopt as his criterion the scientific perspective of absolute, unbiased, suspended, critical judgment. His mind must not be befogged by the haze of prejudgments. He must be moderate and temperate. He must be tenacious, upholding old truths. He must be a radical as well as a conservative in the true meaning of these words. As a radical he must dig into the roots of the subject. As a conservative he must conserve and preserve the heritage of established truths. This is the perspective which every college man should have. There is plenty to be learned here if you come with an open mind. DAILY CALIFORNIAN.
