Heliotropic Washington bends toward Senator Harding, and the staid Senate is fluttered. Never before has a President been selected from its membership, and its experts on procedure thumb in vain the records to get instruction as to the proper sort of reception.
The foreshadowed warmth of the greeting is naturally pleasing to the President-elect. But there is, happily no indication that he has been swept from his moorings to modesty. The habits of a lifetime tether him to this valuable quality, and it is clear he would prefer to slip in among his colleagues with no brass band blaring. But the esteem in which he is held on both sides of the chamber is scarcely to be denied. Even though there is no formal ceremony, his committee room is not likely to be vacant.
The people at large join in welcoming Senator Harding back. Belief that by great good sense he will more than satisfy expectations steadily grows. His failure to present himself as one in whom all wisdom resides has so far not lessened confidence in him. --New York Tribune.
