CERCLE TO PRESENT "FANNY LEAR" THIS AFTERNOON AT COPLEY

PROCEEDS WILL BE GIVEN TO DEVASTATED FRANCE

"Fanny Lear," a French play in five acts, will be presented by the Cercle Francais for the first time this afternoon promptly at 2 o'clock in the Copley Theatre, Boston. The performance will be repeated in the same theatre one week later, Friday, December third. As was the case last year, the proceeds will be given to the American Committee for Devastated France. Student members of the Cercle Francais of the University will take the male parts in the play; Boston girls will act the feminine roles.

Although this play was written by Meilhac and Halevy about fifty years ago, its theme is modern and highly interesting. It deals with, the complications that arise in the life of a French family due to the plotting of a clever but unprincipled woman, Fanny Lear, the English actress and adventuress.

Mrs. Charles Summer Bird Jr. acts this extremely difficult part with unusual skill. M. Perrin, who coached "Primrose" so successfully last year, says that Mrs. Bird has a perfect mastery of the French language and is an excellent actress.

Scott Brothers in Male Leads

The two Scott brothers, who also performed so well last year; have what may be called the leading male parts. W. P. Scott '23 acts the part of the feeble-minded, seventy-year-old Marquis de Noriolis to perfection, muttering or groaning, cackling or walling, walking slowly or hobbling along rapidly as the situation demands. Edgar Scott ocC. does the most humorous part, that of Birnheim, admirably. He plays opposite Miss Rosamond Adie, who takes the part of Niquette.

Miss Helenka Adamowska, who had a leading part last year, returned from Europe so late in the fall that she was able to take only a minor part, that of Madame Bredif. Miss Berthe and Miss Francesca Braggiotti, who are well-known dancers, fill the roles of Marie de Frondeville and Genevieve de Noriolis excellently.

Dominique Audollents sG.B., a Victor Chapman scholar in this country, undertook to play the part of Callieres at short notice, only starting to rehearse Monday as the actor originally casted for the part was unable to continue in the cast.

Great Credit Due Coach

It is due to the Coach, M. Perrin, who has had long experience as an actor on both the French and American stage as well as a coach, that the actors perform their parts so excellently. He returned from France this autumn for the purpose of producing the play.

Tickets are on sale at Herrick's, the Harvard Cooperative branch store, and the box office of the Copley Theatre at $2.50, $2.00 and $1.00.
