In that it started off with a signal drill, a dummy scrimmage, and kicking practice, the workout for the University football squad yesterday was the same as it has been for the first days of this week. However, after these preliminaries, the team which in all probability will meet Yale, went through a short but fiercely contested scrimmage with the second team.
Seconds Swept Back
This contest showed plainly that in the extended layoff which it has had for the last week, that the first-string men had lost none of their fight and power. The black-jerseyed men fought well, but with little success, to stem the tearing plunges of Owen and Horween. Taking the ball straight down the field by gains through the line and around the ends, the University eleven got its only score when Horween rammed straight through the center of the black-jerseyed line for a six-yard gain and a touchdown.
As Kane played the entire game at left end, he seems certain of his position. Macomber and Crocker, however, alternated at the other wing position, and it is impossible to state until Saturday afternoon which of the two will be the final choice.
Choice to be Made at Tackle
Hubbard went through this final scrimmage at tackle and it now seems that he too is one of the certainties that will start against the Elis. The choice between Faxon and Sedgwick seems to be equally as hard as between the right ends.
In the backfield, Buell and Churchill have the edge on the other candidates for quarter and halfback. No matter who is selected to start the big game, it is certain that either of these positions, will be filled by capable, reliable players, who have been through the trying experience of their first "big" game and can be absolutely counted upon not to "crack."
Woods, the veteran guard who had been laid out with a muscle bruise since the Princeton game, was in uniform yesterday, and although he did not take part in the scrimmage, he was at his regular place during the signal drill.
Open Practice Tomorrow
This afternoon the eleven will go through its final workout before leaving for New Haven. At four o'clock the undergraduates will be admitted to the Stadium to witness this final drill, and to practice cheers and songs.
Tomorrow at 10 A. M. a squad of 37 men, the coaches, doctors and managers, will entrain for New Haven. As soon as they arrive, the teams will be given a light workout in the Bowl. That night they will stay at Derby, Connecticut.
