For over half of the hour practice period of the University hockey team a scrimmage with the Tufts aggregation was in order, and during the few minutes that the first-string skaters remained on the ice nine tallies were recorded against Tufts. But when the substitutes were sent in, the game evened itself considerably. Tufts managing to score twice while the Crimson counted three tallies. On the whole the playing was loose and erratic, affording few examples of team-play.
On the part of the University every substitute on the squad had a turn in the practice excepting E. L. Bigelow '21 whose injured head prevented him from participating in anything but the preliminary practice, and J. M. Martin '22, R. R. Higgins '22, and G. Sutton '21, who are temporarily on the sick list. A general shake-up in the squad was visible on Coach Claflin's return from Washington yesterday, as H. F. Colt '22, a defense man and captain of last year's Freshman team was taken from the second team squad up to the first and took part in the scrimmage, while R. G. Payne '20 and R. J. Philips '21 were lowered to the second team.
In the strenuous practice preparatory to the scrimmage the place of Bigelow was taken by T. M. Avery '21, who also held that position against Tufts. On Wednesday night the University team will again meet Tufts in a regular game.
